Canon sets the standard for ease of use and installation in printers, and the
Pro9500 Mark II won’t disappoint in this area. The packaged software, including several useful utilities, is
a nice bonus; of course, you’re given the option of only installing what you really want. Canon also includes
Photoshop Elements with the Pro9500 Mark II, in case you haven’t already got it, as unlikely as that may be at this
level. The new crown jewel of Canon’s bundled software, though, is its Ambient Light Correction feature,
which can be installed as a stand-alone application or as a plugin for Photoshop. This software functions to
adjust prints in such a way that they will maintain their ideal appearance under different types of physical
light. Try printing out a picture with this feature enabled, then hold it under the corresponding type of
light (fluorescent or incandescent), and you’ll see for yourself how impressive the effect is. The only
problem with the Ambient Light Correction software is that it doesn’t appear to work on Macs – PCs only.
The Pro9500 Mark II is very quiet for a printer of this nature. It doesn’t
eat through ink the way other printers in its class do either, so if you consider the price tag with this in mind,
it does become even more attractive.
Of course, if you’re thinking about a high-end printer like the Pro9500 Mark II,
you’re probably most concerned with print quality. As expected, the Pro9500 Mark II’s print quality in all
respects is excellent, providing a wider range of color and gradation than any other printer in its price
range. The Pro9500 Mark II’s print quality really is equal to – and in some aspects, perhaps even greater
than – what you can get from professional photo labs. Even its monochrome output, which has been a stumbling
block for even other high-end units, is very sharp. The difference in quality between the Pro9500 Mark II’s
prints and those of the competition is most noticeable when printing 16-bit images. It’ll really give you
some outstanding results.
The main complaint about the Pro9500 Mark II is its relatively slow print
speed. In fact, it might not even be as fast as the previous generation of high-end Canon inkjet photo
printers. If print quality is your main concern, you may well say that good things come to those who wait,
and you certainly will be waiting for the Pro9500 Mark II, especially if you’re printing large monochrome
images. The Pro9500 Mark II is also perhaps a bit on the large side in terms of its physical dimensions –
you’ll need a reasonable amount of space to take advantage of all of its loading options.
The Pro9500 Mark II is expensive, to be sure. That being said, if you’re
even considering it, you probably know what you’re getting into as far as a monetary investment goes. The
Pro9500 Mark II is the best printer in its class in terms of print quality, and that’s what really matters.
What’s more, there really isn’t anything about it to seriously criticize. If you’re looking to spend this
kind of money on a printer, you can do no better.
