Canon PIXMA MP610 Review

The canon PIXMA MP610 is essentially a upgraded MP600, with a slightly higher price tag. The scanner now scans up to 9600dpi x 4800dpi which is four times the resolution of the MP600. Another new feature is its ability to automatically correct photo images which are connected via a memory card or camera. This works very well.

Upon opening the front of the MP610 you are welcomed by a large 62mm LCD. There are two context function keys, buttons for navigation and the same finger dial and four way buttons as seen on the MP600. These are used to make selections on the printers menu options.

The front output tray flips down and below this is the printer’s cassette tray. Both cassettes can fit up to 150 sheets of paper. You can also load photo paper into the tray.

On the right of the printer there is another flip panel which allows the user to attach a Compact Flash, SD Card, Multi Media card or a Memory Stick.

Included is Canons bundled software which includes a copy of Nuance Omni Page SE Presto. Page Manager, document handling and a CD/DVD photo and labelling application. A separate disc tray for CD/DVD’s is supplied. Which is accessible by pulling down a flap at the front of the MP610 printer, which can be a bit awkward to get to.

Duplexing is another feature carried over from the MP600. Although there isn’t much improvement from the previous MP600 as it still takes quite long, an average 10 seconds wait time between switching print sides. Though it is slow switching, the print quality is exceptional – text pages are very smooth and crisp. The colour photo and graphics quality is also exceptional as both dark and light areas of each image were replicated very well. When Printing photos of the ocean we could clearly see the smoothly shaded colour gradations through out the photo as well as the fine details in the foreground of the image.

The scanner has improved and now has a dual-rendering scheme to produce its scans. It also has improved both blue and yellow colour accuracy over the Canon MP600.

The Canon PIXMA MP610 speeds are still impressive averaging 8.5ppm for text, 4.5ppm for text & graphics and 2ppm for full page photos.

With the improved scanner resolution as well as dual rendering scanning and the automatic photo correction the MP610 has only slightly increased in price and is still great value. The only flaw to this model is the slow duplexing but that aside it’s a great all in one at a decent price.
